What aid money are you talking about?

This cycle of abuse must be stopped. I agree, the government has to make a start. NGOs are OK for some things but they don't have the mandate to change laws. The government should outlaw this system. Adults should be educated that it is wrong to make children work like slaves. Children MUST have right, whatever the country. These kids should be at school. What is all of Haiti's aid money being spent on and who is spending it? Education!

Restavek.. this should be stopped. The government should do something about it, and not relie on the NGOs.For children who are orphaned, it's good that somebody offered them help and a place to stay...It is also justifiable that the children should help in the chores..But never forget that the children are not your slaves..they have their own rights that should be acknowledged and respected..especially their rights for education.

far as the beatings, the nation as a whole still inflicts abuses on itself--a mentality steming from a system that taught them to hate black, themselves. There's something called "igoise", hard, dried animal skin interwoven into a skin-pealing whip, and it's used even in school. You can get it from a street merchant easily. This is something the nation as a whole must come to terms with. Those things facilitate abuses by frustrated, abusive caretakers who were once victims themselves.

Restavek is not a euphamism for slave! Those kids are not slaves; in most cases,There's often child abuse--born of frustration due to the countries overall plight. There are success stories. To make such a comparisson is to justify a system that was born of greed and hatred. Those families in Haiti, both the parents and caretakers, simply don't have. I stayed with family friend as a child in Haiti. I don't expect Aljazeera to copy ABC. Instead, report the causes that lead to such abuses.
