Thoreau once said "the majority of us are doomed to live quiet lives of silent desperation". And Billy Joel's song illustrates this perfectly. In just a little over 5 minutes he creates a complete world and people and characters we can all relate to. It's a song that is both sad and sweet and tells us of disappointment-something that Joel himself has experienced in life. Of dreams that never come to pass and missed opportunities. A truly classic song that only gets better the more you hear it.
