No, it's a joke based on current events at that time. This show was in 1996, I think, and it was only a year or three before that California made history by electing two females to the U. S. Senate at the same time.Bette was telling the truth about Peg Bundy, though. I looked it up.

i agree, bette midler doesnt have the greatest voice ever in the history of music, but she puts on one hell of a show. and also, if you want to get into a "view count" battle, check out youtube's main page. click most viewed, all time. how many american artists do you see there? if we count just music videos, its 90%. the only non american artist with the most music video views is leona lewis.

Damn dude why all the hate? The lady has been performing for over 30 years. She puts on a good show, makes people laugh and most importantly plants trees all over the world (not just NYC) to keep us breathing. We like her. Yeah we are Americans and very proud of Bette Midler. Take a look at her singing (over 10 years after this) at Yankee Arena in NYC after 911. Her voice comforted a nation. Don't look att he clip if you are just going to fart all over it with another hate comment! Stop Hating.
