I'm not really an opera snob, but I have to say that if video technology had not already been invented, it would have been necessary to create it for sublime, now immortal, moments like this aria. Kiri Te Kanawa mesmerizes, makes me forget that she is performing, and remains totally in character during the applause, underlining her amazing ability to channel human longing and approaching the divine.

Ok, thanks for the correction..

is it just me but this note seems higher than when she sang it in 1992 Covent Garden preformance (the other Ave Maria video)?

This was definitely the Arena di Verona. A copy of this preformance on VHS is in the public library media files here in Plano, Texas! Alantov was Otello.

MET in 1974

Can someone tell when this performance was?

Kiri made her very unexpected debut in this very opera at the MET in 1974 when she filled in for Teresa Stratas...Jon Vickers was Otello...it was a Saturday matinee performance, and she simply blew everyone away...the other neat thing is that it was broadcasted on the radio, hence everyone around the country got to hear this very talented lady do her thing.

You're right, but that was a glorious sound.

As my late girlfriend has put it before me, Kiri does it again! Smooth, flowing control and that "exhaled" last note. It gives me goosebumps. Thanks for posting this.
