Urad daal is black gram (split and washed)We can use only Urad daal also for this recipe, and will come out soo good too :)

I have a friend from Guyana who makes something similar-they call it "bara"-with yellow split peas and moong dal and/or urad dal. They soak it and blend it with garlic, ginger, cumin, scallion, garam masala(and other spices) and fry it, then serve it with pickled green mango (achar) or sweet and sour chutney. I tried making it from her recipes many times before I finally got it right-Your instruction to not add too much water is the key! It was delicious and yours looks heavenly! Thank You!

My mother makes this as well. Her Recipe is a bit different. Instead of using chili powder, cumin and tamarind she uses ginger, mustard seeds , cut green chilies and garnishes with Chinese parsley. It is awesome to see someone else's take on this dish.

Also, you can sometimes find lentils in the kosher section of an American grocery store,or with the beans. :3 |
