That actually hasn't been my experience. My brother is an atheist and I constantly say blasphemous things, my parents don't particularly care. They just want us to go to religious functions so they can show off their children to the other desis. My family is from Kerala (big communist state) and fairly mixed - Hindus, Muslims, Christians, atheists - so I've never felt that religious disagreemeents were ever discouraged.

I don't if its absolutely similar but during last some months there was a whole discussion on Ram and where lanka might be here in India and I was showing my parents some alternate views on Ramayan and they were not even willing to listen . And ironically i come from a Sikh family.Debate on religion is impossible in India and probably thats why i love QI for the liberal manner on which these discussions are carried out.

boazdisciple (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
well, we prefer to call it hope, but it's a similar concept, except that hope has more substance ;-)

My family is Orthodox Syrian Christian, which is a native church of India. After seeing this episode, in an attempt to avoid church on Christmas, I tried to convince my mother that we shouldn't be celebrating Christmas because it's not an Indian Christian tradition, rather something the Portuguese persecuted us into following. It didn't really go down very well with her.

EXACTLY! FINALLY! Each time I watch this video, I've been completely shocked that no one's said this yet! I always forget to post it, though. The way I see it, is that the stories of Jesus are simply derivative stories that take place way before they were written. We know of many today, so it's not a concept that's unheard of...

its not just mithrashorus (egyption)joseph (old testament)jesus (new testament)Attis (greece)Krishna (india)Dionysus(greece)the list goes on...take away your beleif and actually look into what you have been told to beleive and you will find thousands of startling comparisons.i beleive the moral of religion not the society that supports it.

The first churches to appear in Rome were built on "holy sites."Whats funny is that they were all built on Mithrateaums (that are now converted into crypts). |
