Usually, the key to playing this song with enough emotion is to slowly and softly play it without using the right pedal.

I know exactly what you mean. But I think he played it that way because, although his music can be emotional at times, Beethoven is in truth a classical composer, not a romantic. I would have enjoyed a more dramatic rendition as well but I think good ol' Wilhelm was playing it as he thought Beethoven imagined it. |
