"Cry " : The 1951-1952 hit sung by Johnnie Ray ( and The Four Lads ).Johnnie Ray (1927 - 1990 ), was also known as "Mr.Emotion ", due to his tendency to occasionally 'cry ' during a live performance. He was extremely popular in Australia in the early 1950's ( especially with women ), and attracted huge crowds whenever he visited the country. The song opens with The Four Lads singing -"Oohwahhh""Oohwahhh""Oohwahhh"Despite being 56 years old, this song doesn't sound 'dated' like a lot of the other hits of that period."Cry " reached Number 1 position on the American charts in late December, 1951, and remained there until March 1952 - a total of 11 weeks in No.1 position !The song on the 'flip side' of the 78 rpm record was "The Little White Cloud That Cried ". This 10 inch, 78 RPM disc ( Okeh 6840), was indeed a 'double sided hit record', and in many cases, it would be difficult to determine whether people purchased the record because it contained "Cry" or "The Little White Cloud That Cried" on the other side. It's generally conceded that "Cry" (on the 'A' side )was the more popular song, and this was the title that appeared in the 'charts' during the 11 week period that the record was in Number 1 position. Two million copies of this record were sold in one year.Okeh was a subsidiary of Columbia Records, and the record was released under the Columbia label in Australia.Another version of "Cry" was sung by Lynn Anderson in 1972 ( see the Lynn Anderson clip ).

I heard that he had something like five no.1s in a short period in the fifties. Looks like comedian Stanley Baxter, imo. Sounds very much of his era.

You should probably check your history. Sinatra's breakout ('41) came before Ray ('51).

Still, he wore a hearing aide.

He was only partly deaf in one of his ears.

Johnny Ray was one of my mother's favorite singer, same as many ladies of the 50s; I heard the music and fell in love with Johnny and his singing style of puntuating sensual words with ultimate drama; wonderful and unique and the ladies went into a frenzy everywhere where he performed!!; long before Frank Sinatra and certainly long before Elvis Mr. Johnny Ray's gyrations and his holding his hands over his left ear and dramatic sining; he had the women conquered.
