It doesn't look like Rex's mom is doing anything out of line or inappropriate. They probably got together because of the piece on 60 minutes. I work in Special Education and we always stress the importance of community and peers. There are so few people in the world like Rex and Derek - it's important for them to know that they aren't alone (and it's probably also comforting to Rex's mom to know that she is not alone either).
