Louis Armstrong - A Rhapsody in Black and Blue (1932)

In prime early form, Satch sings "(I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You," "Shine," and plays "Chinatown, My Chinatown." Another plus is that Louis' generally sorry-sounding OKeh-era big band seems to be having a particularly good day. (On the minus side, everything else about this short - from its "plot" to the settings - is stuffed with stereotypes that may offend 21st-century sensibilities.) Regardless how one feels about the trappings of the day, Louis - as always - rises far above the nonsense surrounding him below.

"Uncle Tom" was a term used to describe a docile slave (a house Negro) who was always loyal to his Master. It was part of a series of stereotypes associated with blacks in the antebellum South (along with Topsy, Mammy, Jezebel, Sambo, etc.) Such stereotypes were used to justify slavery, as they portrayed blacks as "happy servants", lazy coons, sexually seductive Jezebels, aggressive savages, tragic mulattos or child-like creatures (Sambo) who needed to be taken care of by the whites.
