they steepend the track banking to sustain the speeds we see today. and in 1973 it got even worse, and agan they were getting very close to a 200 mph lap during time trials.cool music. it's like 60's Get Smart stuff.i'm sure he was killed upon impact...internal injuries from rapid (instant) deceleration, causes tremendous g-forces on the internal organs...a dislocated aeorta like lady Di

Sunday Morning, 14th may, he turned in a lap at 186mph and was going into the 3rd Turn when he lost control. He had no time to apply the brakes and the Thermo King Eagle veered right and crashed almost head-on into the wall. There were skid marks for 75 feet and car parts scattered 150 yards away. It took more than 10 minutes to extricate Malloy, unconscious, fom the car. He had head injuries, fractures of both legs and hips, a broken right arm, and second-degree burns on his hands and feet.

This type of music was cutting edge back when these films were produced. Definitely give it a haunting feel. It's a sure time capsule....video, narration and music. Thank you for posting!

Back at that time, the speeds were not only slower, but widely varied during the lap. Now they maintain 220 all the way around, but back then, they might have hit 205 at the end of the straights, but dropped to 170-180 in the turns. Bolt-on wings were still a new entity in 1972.

approx 186mph....trying to get that magical 200mph barrier. He never had a chance at that speed/angle. The walls were very unforgiving during this era of Indy.
