On the simcha (celebration) of Israel's 60th birthday, this documentary short by 14-year-old Michele Pinczuk asks Holocaust survivors: "What would you get Israel for its 60th birthday?" The significance of interviewing Holocaust survivors is profound because they know firsthand the dire consequences of not having a Jewish homeland. L'Chaim Israel is based on the poetry of its creator, Michele, the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. One week after completing the film, Michele's grandfather died. She is grateful to have captured his memory as a survivor in this touching film. Update: In May 2008, Michele's film took first place in the Washington Jewish Film Festival's Israel@60 Student Film Contest. She won a $250 Israel Bond and her film was screened during the festival.

I never get tired of watching this film! There's something very special about it. In fact, it has the "it" quality or magic that every filmmaker could ever hope to have in their films.

This video says it all by a talented young filmmaker. Michele's family should be very proud of her works.

For all those that did not learn about the Holocaust, Michele's video brought the faces and thoughts of the survivors to the screen to let the viewer understand how important Israel is to the continuation of the Jewish faith. She has done it with love and understanding and great talent. Way to go, Michele!
