Well if you're going to say he's the "far and away" best defensive center ever, you should factor in that he never faced Jabbar,Shaq, Malone, Olajuwon all 4 in NBA top10 all-time scoring at the center spot. Other centers had it more difficult to be considered best defensive center. Blocked inferior athletes overall compared to later eras, did not play with a 3 pt. line. But definitely man to man defence, and his ability as a help defender Russell was remarkable.

Of course Bill isn't like MJ, he played in the Civil Rights era and endured racism whereas Mike was the Nba media machine darling. Unlike Mike he didn't walk away from the game when winning titles to bat .200, chase hookers and gamble in casinos.

You can't hold the era he played in against him. Even though fundementals were different back then that man helped make many of the fundementals we have in taday's game, he was so dominant in college they widened the free throw lane from ten feet to twelve becuase he got so many boards from missed free throws, and he was also the reason for offensive goaltending, the players you named are great but no player was as dominant for thier time as Russell.

he isnt like michael jordan, but Bill russell is a legend.

Finally, a classic basketball tribute without a rap soundtrack! I'm not the biggest fan, but these highlights are beautiful to watch.

keinDeutsch - Russell coached the Celtics for 3 years, 1967-1969. They lost the East finals his first year (to Wilt's 76ers). That broke their string of 8 straight titles. They then won the next two titles before Russell retired in 1969.In 1968, they came from behind from a 3-1 deficit in the East finals against Wilt's 76ers and won 3 straight, winning the series in 7 games. Wilt was held to 14 points in game 7 (not his fault, his teammates never got him the ball).

to Fusheng - you're an idiot. Russell blocked a lot of shots in his career besides the block at 0:54... like Wilt's for example.

The Misiek, you forgot the year russel coached the celtics. It was the year Red Auerbach retired. Russel was the player coach. HE made it to the finals, not sure if he won or not. But that could be because he already had the team respect and the team already built, but he did coach them. |
