It doesn't sound too muffled. It is probably just the damper pedal. I think its a Steinway, and they tend to sound soft like that when the damper pedal is used or when the pianist has very good control and can play very, very soft. (I played a Steinway Concert Grand for several years)

Well, I think that the first bars are played by first violins, second violins, Celesta, Horns and Tubas. I'm not sure, I have a lot of scores at home, but this score is very expensive. Nevertheless, I know quite good the work of John Williams and those instruments that I've just said are the most possible.Regards from Spain!!
