yeah she had a match point against garrisson,and lets not forget garrisson went on to beat steffi graf in the semis, too beat seles and graf back to back in those days almost must have been impossible, no wonder she sunk against martina, too get there in the first place was a mammoth achievment!if only seles could have closed out that match point , i wonder who would have won the tournament, tennis was more exciting in those days,ahh the memories

Well, I'm not so sure of the "worst surface" tag in this respect, at least before Seles was stabbed, when she had only played three grass court tournaments, Wimbledon 1989, 1990 and 1992, in her whole career, two of her losses coming to Graf and one to Garrison in a match in which Seles had match point. I wonder what Seles' major record would be like if she had appeared in the late 1960s/early 1970s, when three of the four Grand Slams were played on grass...

i agree if she had played the same way against steffi in the final as she had done in the semis against navratilova,she could have won wimbledon 1992, graf and navratilova were just two jealous cows, hee hee

Monica had definitely no intensity in the final. she just bunted the ball in against Steffi howerer in the semis against Martina she was all intensity and all power. sure the final could have gone Monica's way had she been allowed to play and grunt and let her shots just like this semis against Martina.

I think Evert was complimentary towards Seles. Remember Navratilova was a very close friend of hers who she shared a special rivalry with for many years so a little partiality to Martina is understandable, it should in no way be interpreted as anti-Monica.

I agree with you. She probably would not have won the final but would have probably also played a better match. Regardless what happened in the final this match will always be a highlight moment for her, big win on her worst surface and well earned Wimbledon final appearance.

This match has a whole different feel to it than the final a couple of days later between Seles and Graf. I'm not sure that Monica would have beaten Steffi if Monica had grunted in the final, but she would probably have made much more of a match of it than she did. This semi-final with Martina shows that Monica was capable of doing damage to other great players on grass, regardless of their age.

iv been a seles fan since 1990 also, i thought evert was quite complimentary towards monica in this match, she favoured steffi graf tho u can tell by her commentating in the 92 french final she was willing seles too tire and let steffi win, this is a classic match,with navratilova, she played no where near as good in the final
