that exactly what he hated,the opportunities in life you see and would like have.fake expectations and hypocritic way of living.that's why he left his all around "great" life,he did not belive in such a fake(caus it is fake) way to live

life is life no matter how you live it.. noones there to tell you how.. form the start if your lucky you got good parents that teach you well.. and dont drop you off @ a day care of just negelect.. the character the movies based on seemed to have a btter life than most.. and it was his dumb choice..

How he never came through with calling his family? Never came through with any of this newly made friends (hippies, the girl, old man), all of which could have made his life very happy and he just up and left. Well, many things, guess it was -partially- selfish, however, it was his choice and I believe he was selfish for parts of it. As we all become at times in our lives.
