Around twelve years before his death Orwell said of the Spanish Civil War that he "should probably have joined the anarchists". Later, around the time of writing 1984, he expressed doubts about Anarchism. Who knows, but why did he have to pin his colours to the mast and proscribe one fixed dogma like socialism or conservatism or anarchism or whatever? Surely there are as many approaches to given societal situations as there are variables in every human negotiation. Does one size fits all work?
Interbrigadist (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
He was left. But he was against the opression in USSR. USSR under Stalin was not a socialist state. It was a dictature of Stalin. Stalin killed lots of communists in the 1930ies.Orwell was fighting in the spanish civil war at the side of the interbrigades. But the interbrigades were splitted by the stalinists. Lots of brigadists were killed at the big "cleaning". Read the book "animalfarm" and read between the lines. Its interesting.

Is Orwell conservative or liberal? His works seem to oppose the USSR and socialism. However, Wikipedia and other sites claim him to be left winged. Someone explain this man to me?

The BBC IS the Ministry of Truth.

No, he died "naturally" of TB. He'd been suffering for years - and in any case he'd been quite reckless with his health all his life.

does any think he was murdered for his political books, like 1984??
dubzy81 (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
well come to thinkof it he can't have been THAT anti-west cos he grassed pu loads of supposed communists ot his government including chalie chaplin, he wrote a list. And 1984 and animal farm are both obvious anti-stalinist stories. you could make a giant list of 1984's references t the bolsheviks. |
