Actually, you are incorrect. The producers put this hidden gem of a song in for their gay audience, who would have a clearly different interpretation of the song without the "innocent" straight audience thinking otherwise. Watch the documentary "The Celluloid Closet" where one of the folks behind the film talks about this scene in particular.
