Not the plot of 'Splendor in the Grass' so much as a certain scene in the film where Natalie Wood is outside in a yard of the sanitarium. Now that that's settled....

Wait, not 'The Glass menagerie' but the 1961 film 'Splendor in the Grass' with Natalie Wood. That came to mind when hearing this song with (English) lyrics for the first time yesterday. It's easy to understand the misperception as a child (as in Bill Evans' 3-year old niece) or mentally ill person can both live in dream like worlds.

Okay, it was when she sings, "In her own sweet world....in the sun she dances to silent music songs that are spun of gold somewhere in her little head...": that to me sounded like something akin to a Tennessee Williams play like 'The Glass Menagerie" or something. I'm homless (using public librray omputers) so have met a few homeless woman with severe mental illness before. Kind of hoped in a way that is what the song was about. But still it's very, very nice being about a 3-year old child.

Searched around, and looks like 'A Waltz For Debbie' was a Bill Evans mainstay written for his 3-year old niece (lyrics by Gene Lees). Hope I got that right. When I first heard these English lyrics, by Rita Reys, I had the impression it was a song about an insane young woman. Guess not (!). Anyhow, thank you...
