It seems that the lyrics are a pastiche of several languages: hebrew, french, arabic, italian ... probably more that I can't recognize.

The problem is that it would sound like she's just making crap (words) up. It's a noticeable pattern in the way one recognizes gibberish.

Look. She admits throughout many sites on the internet, not to mention interviews she has given. She projects a sound that she feels by emotion at a specific point in the music. This has nothing to do with a language whatsoever. This doesnt detract from her piece. Its as beautiful as ever. However it is not Hebrew, Gaelic, or Aramaic. In such few words it is Gibberish. Again, don't let that take away from her art!

I was mistaken, it is an example of melismatic singing. I only went off of the words "anol shalom", which ARE hebrew."It's a language invented within the music, inherently, and the words mean more than I can say in English", she says. "The way I sing is not new; it's been around since the beginning of time, and it's something all children are born with. It's not unique to me, but for some reason I never lost the ability" -- interview of Lisa Gerrard about the song.

That's interesting! Do you think the work of Karl Jenkins is an inspiration to this song? I'd be shocked if some inspiration didn't come from it!

its not really a language..she said once that it is like when her daughter was younger and couldnt talk, she used to make sounds with her voice to express what she was feeling..and she said that with her music she does the same thingLOVE this song btw :)
