Doc Watson - 1991 - Black Mountain Rag. I've included Doc's introduction and explanation of his background with this particular tune. I've always loved the interesting anecdote that Doc developed his now legendary flatpicking style while playing a Les Paul (electric solid body guitar) while he was playing in a Rockabilly band in the 1950's. Additionally, I've heard that he actually didn't even own an acoustic guitar at that time. It's interesting that this style has since become associated with, nearly exclusively, acoustic guitars, particularly Martin dreadnoughts. I've always wondered what kind of reception a picker would get at the National Flatpicking Contest in Winfield Kansas if he were to show up to compete with a Les Paul in hand!

i'm a self-taught guitarist and i cant read notes/tablature/chords properly. i play by ear cause that works best 4 me. watching this guy makes ya think if notes are even necessary

Some wiz kids may play faster, etc, but no one has his touch, or FEEL for the music he was immersed in.'72; couple years out of HS heard "Sittin' on Top of the World" on an FM rock station, Philly. Subdued but there was something there, some feeling I never heard before. Bought LP "Doc Watson"; wore it out. Lo and behold saw in the paper where he & Merle were coming to our high school gymnasium to play! Fingers like pistons. Best live concert I ever saw was on a HS basketball court!
