I think that NASA trained astronauts would recognize the "millions" of other possibilities out there. That is why this is so significant. Even to this day, they don't know what it was (or at least that's what they tell us). They could see common space debris and just say "Okay there's some rock, ice, etc." But no. They knew this object was something different.

It was probably an alien airship with aliens driving. More than likely not a rock or dust cloud or any other orbiting body or any of the millions of other possibilities.
