The Bible is a library of books written by nine different independent authors who agree on a number of subjects. By any historical standards, it is a good reference. Aside from this, Josephus (even if you disagree with the main translation, he mentions Jesus), Thallus and Phlegon (whose writings have been lost but who are often quoted by later authors), in the early 100's you get Pliny, Tacitus, Suetonius, and Mara Bar-Serapion.

Guess what other numbers come up in the bible? Seven, forty (a shorthand number generally representing basically any 'big number' in the ancient world). Come on.Wow, you found a parallel? Big fucking deal, the Bible is chock full of parallels, and back then everyone knew it! Just because His word contains parallels to astrology, or even other gods (some of which aren't really in the Bible) does not disqualify Jesus in the slightest. Crucifiction did happen in the Roman world, yes?

lol. Really? Give me ONE example of 1st century historical evidence that Jesus existed. The Bible doesn't count. For now it has just as much credibility as "Jason Takes Manhattan"
robertvroom (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
There is more historical evidence of Jesus' existence (both Biblical and non-Biblical sources) than just about any other historical figure, and these sources are from within a much shorter time frame than any other ancient figure. By any standard, Jesus' history is very well documented.I have trouble understanding why it is difficult to accept that the being that could create the Universe would be unable to create a world-wide flood, split a sea or raise a person from the dead.

robert I have no doubt it had confirmed trade routes and city locations. "Jason Takes Manhattan" had confirmed city locations too. That doesn't mean there's really a guy named Jason Vorhees that comes back from the dead every Friday the 13th to brutally murder people. And if you start trying to call the Bible realistic you're just gonna get laughed at. It has a talking snake, a person being built out of someone else' rib, and worldwide floods...

Kieran, why is Christianity wrong. Your statement doesn't provide convincing evidence of your point.

ChelevSaRa, There are multiple versions of the Horus myth and I have seen the one you are referencing. There is one Jesus. I wonder if the story of Osiris being resurrected as Horus was pre or post Jesus. Do you have a reference I can use to research this further? You bring up one other interesting fact... Egyptian mythology is not realistic. They are mythological legends. If you read the Gospels, they are historical documents with many confirmed facts (trade routes, city locations, etc). |
