BOTCG was mainly about the death of James Honeyman-Scott -- Pete Farndon did not die until the summer after the song was released (1982).Chrissie Hynde also did not break up with Ray Davies until the next year (1983).I always thought it was at least somewhat about John Lennon, too -- not that CH knew him personally, but to what he meant to everyone of her approximate age.
