Correct!! The portugese immigrants brought it over when they came to work on the sugar cane fields and the hawaiians took hold of it and incorporated it into their music. Ukulele in hawaiian means "jumping flea" in reference to the quick movements of the fingers. I am a Hawaiian and we have a lot of other good musicians who play nahenahe music with the ukulele. Peter Moon, Kelly Boy Delima, Troy Fernandez and a whole lot of others. Aloha

Some ukes are tuned with a Low G string. Jake used to use one like this so you may be listening his older recordings.

I only see 4 tuning pegs, so unless the 5th string is anchored somewhere else than the headstock, this is a 4 string. I have one of his CDs and it sounds like there's more bass than a normal uke on some of the tracks. He might just detune though. I'm a guitar player so this is all just educated guessing.
