Actually his holding on after the taps has a story behind it. Early on, an opponent denied the tap after having done it (Ken Shamrock), which infuriated Royce. Gerard gordeau allegedly bit Royce's ear, and the kung-fu guy talked smack against the gracies and had fought them in the past. I think Royce was so scarred by these early bad experiences that he decided never to leave it to chance.
