I'm pretty sure Stephen is right in the sense that none (not one) is the original and proper use of the word, but over time (since the 9th century) Alan's usage has been accepted, even if it's not STRICTLY correct. Much like the proper usage of who and whom, most people these days use who in all instances even when whom is correct. This is just Alan be Joe Average and Stephen being the quintessential English encyclopaedia of language and loveliness, which makes them both so brilliant!
