As a note, the FAJKO directory in 1919 states that, at the age of 51, Funakoshi sensei learned the Pinan Kata (Heian) from Mabuni Kenwa" (for more details on this topic see: (FAJKO Karate-Do Directory 1979 p81 & Standing on the shoulders of giants, a book by McCarthy 1994).

i didn't know Mabuni taught Funakoshi the pinan kata...i thought Itosu did.

Bunkai varies. It's narrow minded to believe that there is only one interpretation. The variations in kata amongst the traditional systems is precisely due to the variations in interpretations. It could be a down block sometimes, a strike others, or a take down, etc., etc. This, being open minded and understanding the priciple of adaptation according to the circumstances, is "key" in understanding kata.

That is exactly the point we make in our extended video series (and I think it is even mentioned in this short video). Of course it can be used as a downward block (as we do it all the time in fighting) but undertanding its other applications is key. |
