What I remember most from this DVD is the way Marton walked on stage for her final bow. It was so clear that she was completely exhausted physically, and probably emotionally. Say what you will about this high note or that -- the woman left blood on the stage that night.

Sometimes I think that Nilsson is perhaps too strong for human roles at all...Strauss surely noticed, that things like Elektra belong to the most difficult things so sing; so I think he perhaps wanted a singer who shows us the realm of ecstatics also by beeing totally exhausted at the end. Nilsson not even seems to be really tired at any time...

No, I don't think Marton is comparable to Nilsson. She isn't even competent in this role, having to shout those high notes which should've been sung with a soft tone.

Just Eva Marton! For me she is much better than Nilsson who is totaly emotionless and sterile for me and unfortunately /I know this is very subjective/ I do not like her voice colour at all. Eva is the best Elektra both dramtically and vocally for me.

I was thinking of purchasing this DVD of "Elektra"; would you be so kind to tell me if you, perhaps, have a better performance recorded on DVD to recommend? (as it is one of your favorite operas)

Marton is an excellent Elektra, but who can fill Birgit Nillson's shoes in this fiendishly difficult role?
