That's why I wrote dueling with Armstrong rather than playing. They had to fight hard to be the dominant soloist.Even though they didn't like each other, Hawkins couldn't cut Armstrong with that ragtime slap tonging he was doing. A human being can hold that up long enough to compete with a man like Louis.Once he incorporated Armstrong-style legato phrasing into his technique, he would become Coleman Hawkins all over again.

I've never heard of Prince Robinson. But if you listen to Bean's early records he's still adapting Sidney Bechet's style to the instrument. In fact, Coleman would deny that early records were recordings of him, embarressed by what he saw as a primitive style.Only after dueling with Armstrong in the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra would he become the Hawk we know and love.

Hawkins was known as the "Hawk" (as in album _The Hawk Flies High_) or "Bean" (as in album _Bean And The Boys_). According to Hawkins there were good tenor saxophonists before him, such as Prince Robinson.
