Actually, the anime came first. The manga was a knockoff series. I personally think that the anime showed a much better plot, grasp of french history, and character depth.

nods Le Chevalier D'Eon is one of the reasons I watched Rose of Versailles...as far as animation for the late late 70s (I think) It wasn't that bad...
