Well, it was written to be sung in short phrases only because it was written with Glynis Johns in mind. It's such a gorgeous melody, so if it CAN be sung better than Glynis sang it, why not? And Ms. Howes' performance here is the most beautiful I've ever heard of this song. Phenomenal production, this was - THE dream case for Night Music.

She's extremely talented. But to me, it's just too 'sung', if that makes any sense. This song was written to be sung in short phrases, and the legato way she's singing it feels more lyrical (like Judy's version) than theatrical (like Glynis's version). Not my favorite rendition, but SAH still is amazing.

One of my favorite singers of all time performing in one of my favorite shows. I recorded this when it was on PBS, and the video (recently transferred to DVD) is one of my prize possessions. I was fortunate enough to see Miss Howes in a semi-staged production of "Where's Charley" at the Kennedy Center a few years back, and she was amazing then, as well.

Wish you'd included some of the scene leading up to the song--it really makes the song itself so much more powerful.......

This is my favorite version of this song. Not only is she a good singer, she's interesting to watch.
