I think Knopfler is brilliant because he can capture the spirit of things he never seen or been part of.This song is brilliant

Mark knopfler was born in Glasgow, scotland, to an ENGLISH mother and HUNGARIAN father and he was never in NAM. But the song is QUALITY and TIMELESS

Mate these guys were never soldiers in Nam or anywhere else. Mark was a journo for the Yorkshire Evening Post and studying for his degre in English at Leeds uni during the war period. He and the guys fomred Dire Straits in the summer of 77 and on the 27th of July 1977 recorded the now famous demo tapes of five songs - "Wild West End", "Sultans of Swing", "Down To The Waterline", "Sacred Loving" and "Water of Love". No trauma here dude just brilliant songwriting/playing

My Mom and I have NEVER agreed about music, but this is both our favorite song and favorite video. Ever. This redeems all the glut of crap that tries to pass as music and reminds us what an electric guitar and a talented writer can accomplish when they strive for something worthwhile. Something that lasts. "Where O death is your victory? Where O death is your sting?" 1 Cor. 15:54
