This was swing era jazz, but the bebop players came shortly after, and were influenced by Charlie Christian. If you want to know what bebop is, listen to Charlie Parker. Basically its usually up tempo, with lost of chromatic (half steps-one fret on a guitar) licks.Wes Montgomery got his start playing Charlie Christian solos note for note.

That´s right. Because there was a Charlie Christian, and a Leadbelly, and a Robert Johnson, and a Muddy Waters, (and many others) we have rock and roll, and we have metal now. These are the common, glorious roots!!

I'm just one of many jazz guitarists whose first exposure to jazz guitar came from C.C. when he was with Benny Goodman. Charlie was mainly swing, & bebop on guitar never really came into being until Tal Farlow came out with "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" around 1956.

I'm just getting into jazz guitar. I'm loving Wes Montgomery, Django, and this is the first time I've heard Charlie Parker. Life is good!! Can anyone tell me what style jazz this is referred to? Be-bop, hard bop or what? (I know Django is "gypsy jazz", but, it sounds like it fits into Wes' and Charlie's catagory) Thanx. |
