It is a preference really. Some prefer Baroque to early classical, and some prefer the latter. I am such an example, because I prefer Verdi, Brahms, Rachmaninov, etc over the older styles of Handel, Mozart, Haydn, etc. I have performed Requieme's by Brahms, Ockeghem, Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, Cherubini, and Pizetti...and, out of all of them, none were as dramatic and diverse as Verdi. I agree that it is a lot of solo work, but the level of drama is incredible if you have the right performers.
