letterman isnt funny and is a bit rude. leno isnt funny and is the opposite...sacharine sweet. i am a fan of eddie izzard and the late bill hicks. joan rivers...not so much. i've not heard of those other comics. to be honest i dont listen to much standup anymore.

Ross would never make it as a stand up in the UK, either! He's a talk show host first, and a funnyman second. He may sound rude, but he also asks far more daring questions than the likes of Letterman or Leno.Again, everything you say about Gervais being self-depricating and insightful applies more so to the other, I think superior comics: Eddie Izzard, Bill Bailey, Jack Dee, Frankie Boyle, Mark Watson, Connelly.I like Joan Rivers but Bill Hicks was the last great American standup.

I definately agree that American and British humour is similar.. in that respect it's all about the financial set up. The non-commercial BBC means you can watch some particularly unique (and often bizzare) comedy programmes--alot of satire etc--on some random tuesday evening. Whereas in the US the sit-com style is indebted to generating audience figures. This is why I believe British TV is best for documentaries and comedy, whereas the US is great for high-budget drama, action, and much else.

jonathan ross would never make it in america whereas i believe ricky gervais is going to become a huge film star here. the british office is probably the best sitcom ever, american or british. as an american i have no problem admiting that. by the way the american office sucks. the jokes are obvious. but then that is probably because american television is made for women. american women like their humor simple. i bet vapid american women would love jonathan ross though.

well i will say seinfeld did seem to hold his own but you can tell he doesnt enjoy engaging is such uncivilized insulting no matter how funny brits might find it.

if we are talking about standup then american standup and british standup is very similar, essentially because our standup of the 70's and 80's influenced british culture so much. i am just talking about jonathan ross's type of humor wish seems to be based on simply outright insulting someone and dishing out cliche one liners which can be applied to just about anything. but gervais is an exception. his standup act is highly insightful, socially analytical and often self deprecating.

By the way, I think you're argument is confused here by the fact that most of the more sarcastic and patronising lines come from Seinfeld, not Ross! Not that I have any problem with that it's hilarious.
