that is ONE of the ways to express them. My dog had impacted glands which lead to surgery. My Vet showed me how to do it. Highly recommend it if you don't want to see your dog in pain like mine.

She did it wrong.... i won't go into detail but you PUT ON A GLOVE, put vasaline on the front, stick a finger in and squeeze with your thumb as a wall on the outside. DONT try it yourself. Take the animal to a veterinary tech

i do this everytime i wash my dog (a pekingese). most smaller dogs have more of a problem with anal glands. it's the worst smelling squirt known to man. :P

You should NEVER express your dogs anal glands unless he/she absolutely needs it done! And if that is the case, take the dog to the vet! When done improperly this can cause infections, and other problems and complications. Most dogs express their own glands naturally when they need to, so just leave their glands alone unless a problem arises.

They forgot to mention that in most cases dogs will express their anal glands themselves when they use the bathroom. Most dogs don't need them done. Once someone starts doing this to the dog, the dog may never do it themselves again and you wind up having to bring the dog in to get it expressed frequently. If your dog is scooting it may need it, but otherwise leave it alone!
